New Horizons Pluto–Kuiper Belt mission: design and simulation of the Pluto–Charon encounter
نویسندگان
چکیده
The primary goal of the New Horizons Pluto–Kuiper Belt mission is to explore Pluto by 2020, before Pluto’s atmosphere collapses as predicted by scientists, and then explore the Kuiper Belt objects in an extended mission. The baseline mission plans to launch in January 2006, using a Jupiter gravity assist trajectory to reach Pluto. The New Horizons spacecraft will arrive at Pluto as early as 2015, depending on the launch vehicle. For such a mission, whose exploration takes place during a brief flyby period after a long cruise, a thorough planning of the encounter is especially critical to the realization of optimal science observations. A detailed Pluto encounter trajectory design that achieves both solar occultation and Earth occultation by both Pluto and Charon is described in this paper, along with discussions of the design rationale and considerations. Science observations and measurements planned for the Pluto–Charon encounter are simulated and analyzed, and a comprehensive Pluto–Charon encounter process filled with detailed science observation simulations is demonstrated in a 3-D animation. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Origin of the Pluto–Charon system: Constraints from the New Horizons flyby
New Horizon’s accurate determination of the sizes and densities of Pluto and Charon now permit precise internal models of both bodies to be constructed. Assuming differentiated rock-ice structures, we find that Pluto is close to 2/3 solar-composition anhydrous rock by mass and Charon 3/5 solar-composition anhydrous rock by mass. Pluto and Charon are closer to each other in density than to other...
متن کاملA giant impact origin of Pluto-Charon.
Pluto and its moon, Charon, are the most prominent members of the Kuiper belt, and their existence holds clues to outer solar system formation processes. Here, hydrodynamic simulations are used to demonstrate that the formation of Pluto-Charon by means of a large collision is quite plausible. I show that such an impact probably produced an intact Charon, although it is possible that a disk of m...

The New Horizons (NH) mission was selected by NASA in November 2001 to conduct the first in situ reconnaissance of Pluto and the Kuiper belt. The NH spacecraft was launched on January 19, 2006, received a gravity assist from Jupiter during closest approach on February 28, 2007, and is currently heading for a flyby encounter with the Pluto system. NH will study the Pluto system for nearly seven ...
متن کاملFirst Constraints on Rings in the Pluto System
Simple theoretical calculations have suggested that small body impacts onto Pluto's newly discovered small satellites, Nix and Hydra, are capable of generating time-variable rings or dust sheets in the Pluto system. Using HST/ACS data obtained on 2006 February 15 and 2006 March 2, we find no observational evidence for such a ring system and present the first constraints on the present-day I/F a...
متن کاملThe Surface Age of Sputnik Planum, Pluto, Must Be Less than 10 Million Years
Data from the New Horizons mission to Pluto show no craters on Sputnik Planum down to the detection limit (2 km for low resolution data, 625 m for high resolution data). The number of small Kuiper Belt Objects that should be impacting Pluto is known to some degree from various astronomical surveys. We combine these geological and telescopic observations to make an order of magnitude estimate th...
